Me again. :-) If you still have telephone service, or can set it up, UUCP is a way of preserving some internet-like computer communication without the commercial backbones we have now. Limits what you have to something like email and UsenetNews, instead of the whole web, but still quite useful and more secure (if you use PGP) than voice.
If things go to hell and the phonenet dies entirely, might it be feasible to lay a line from your gulch to the gulch across the way? Well, if you're trading partners, it would sure facilitate trade----neither gulch sends people on a wasted trip---the courier of the goods knows just how much to take, and just how much to pick up, and it's ready for delivery when he gets their. If your plumber is down with the flu, theirs may be able to visit in the truck bringing the trade goods. Considerably less obvious to all the world than broadcast, if you're smart about laying the line.
If you've got a line to the gulch on the other end, and they've got a line out, etc., your economic possibilities expand a lot. But you have to watch the tradeoffs with respect to risk.
Julie
